Luc Tuymans Catalogue Raisonné
With support from my associate curator, Johannes Schmidt, since 2010 I have been working on a catalogue raisonné of all Luc Tuymans’ paintings on canvas. Tuymans was born in Mortsel, Belgium, in 1958; he now lives in Antwerp and is one of Belgium’s best known artists. He has already produced well over 500 paintings, which are now in leading international museums and influential private collections throughout the world. Since the mid-1980s his style of painting has played inestimable part in the reinvigoration of representational painting—critics even talk of a “Tuymans effect.” I first met Luc Tuymans in 1993 when I was working on his exhibition at Museum Haus Lange in Krefeld. Ever since then I have been fascinated by his unique view of the images that are our world. Tuymans’ paintings are masterful art, but they also embody both philosophy and politics. At the same time, they are not representations of reality; they actively refract contemporary imagery with its ideological and media-fueled baggage.

The first volume, Luc Tuymans: Catalogue Raisonné of Paintings, Volume 1, 1972–1994, is expected to be published (by David Zwirner Books/Yale University Press) in late 2017. This substantial publication covers the first 186 paintings: each is reproduced and has its own scholarly apparatus. This volume also contains a full list of exhibitions and bibliography up until 2016 and an illustrated, annotated chronology up until 1994.

Other Projects
Discretion dictates that certain projects currently under way are not to be publicized here yet. News of these will follow in due course.
