Curator for Artists–an entirely new enterprise–responds to the changes in the art
scene in recent decades. The perception and appreciation of art has increasingly come to
be dominated by auctions and by the gallery economy. Cultural policies nowadays tend to
be determined above all by “public interest” considerations and visitor numbers. All too
often this has seen intense engagement with matters of artistic substance and dialogue
with the artists in the development and realisation of projects falling by the wayside.
Curator for Artists meets artists’ need for meaningful collaboration.
Curator for Artists is not tied into the art market. It will explicitly not engage in dealing
or mediating works of art on a commission basis. It is only within a wholly autonomous
structure, detached from the art market, that it is possible to conduct–without
distractions and in confidence–the dialogues needed to explore artistic content and
meaning. There are three locations and realms of activity for Curator for Artists: the
studio, the writing desk and the public arena. Curator for Artists is a fulcrum connecting
the artist and the public. In the truest sense of curation, it “cares for and oversees” the
appropriate mediation and appreciation of contemporary art.
